As the newly elected Mayor I am pleased to
welcome you to our web site. It gives me great
pleasure to introduce you to the ever-changing
and ever-improving City of Herculaneum. Founded
by Moses Austin and Samuel Hammond in 1808, we
look forward to celebrating our Bicentennial in
October 2008. We are a city rich in history and
pride ourselves on our past while constantly
looking to the future.
Changes are occurring regularly and right now
we are experiencing an unprecedented economic
expansion. The last two years have welcomed
several new businesses to our city, with more
waiting on the horizon to join us.
A residential renaissance is creating an
increase of new homes with the opening of The
Prairies, Providence, Stone Water and Lexington
Place. Our safe neighborhoods, both new and old
alike, provide the perfect setting for raising a
family. Our excellent schools illustrate our
dedication and commitment to the education of
Herculaneum’s children.
We have witnessed an aggressive strategy in
Community Policing by hiring the city’s first
Chief of Police. Chief Pigg has developed new
community oriented programs such as “Are You
OK?” “Neighborhood Watch” and “Night Eyes
Business Watch”. Chief Pigg was instrumental in
developing a Travel Safe Community Partnership
with neighboring communities Pevely and Festus.
The Partnership is committed to reducing motor
vehicle crashes along an 8-mile stretch of
Interstate 55 that was established as a Travel
Safe Zone.
In January 2006, Herculaneum hired Bill
Whitmer as its City Administrator. Mr. Whitmer
is responsible for the efficient and economic
day-to-day operation of the city and reports to
the Mayor and City Council. He acts as a liaison
between the Mayor, the Council and the city
Department heads. His other duties include
organizational development of management and
budget policies that effect the daily operations
of city business.
As you navigate our web site notice all of
the different departments who work for our
citizens and all the citizens who volunteer
their time to improve and beautify our city. I
hope you find our website both informational and
enjoyable. I thank you for visiting us and
taking the time to learn more about our
community. Please contact me if you have any
questions or concerns. I am always interested in
hearing from fellow citizens and visitors to our
city.
Thank you,
Mayor Gina Vinyard
